Basic Etiquette Tips

Etiquette is a code of behavior that influences expectations for social

behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group.

Most of us take lots of our actions for granted, there are some actions that are a no no and shouldn’t be done, here are some of them.

Social Conventions

It is important not to give or receive items with your left hand. This hand is normally reserved for personal hygiene. This is a general fact but some people seem to have forgotten this.

Begging

Begging has become part of life in some cultures, even though some

argue it is wrong. In any case, a polite acknowledgement by bowing your head and smiling is essential. Some of us go as far as hitting them, this is wrong.

Meeting & Greeting

The most common greeting is a handshake with a warm, welcoming smile. In our society however, Men may place their left hand on the other

person’s shoulder while shaking hands while they generally they waits for the woman to extend her hand. Do not sit down while shaking hands with people, it is impolite.

Fowl Language

This is more important for ladies, a lady watches what she says. Now,

there you have us all Nigerian women. There are certain words that must not ensue from a lady’s mouth; for example, words heavily laden with

abuses, insults, curses, and such shrew-like epithets are not ladylike.

Stop using them!

Skirt on Bikes

It pains us each time we see a women straddling Okada with all their dignity packed up with their skirts, or when I watch their waistlines jiggling up and down as the road contours. There are things ladies just do not do; they do not let money, position or politics make them lose their sense of propriety. They also do not ride Okada astride in skirts.

Politeness

I wish it were possible to convince every one that politeness is a most

excellent good quality; that it is a necessary ingredient in life. Most of us

have totally forgot how to use simple words like Thank you, Excuse me,

Please etc. We should imbibe the culture of being polite at all times, it goes a long way in helping us in life, being rude wont earn you anything

positive.

Picking your nose in public

This is like all shades of wrong!!! If you are guilty of this, you need to stop digging/picking your nose in public, it doesn’t speak well of you in any

way and it’s quite disgusting to be honest. If you really need to do this,

excuse yourself and clean your nose with a handkerchief or toilet paper.

Don’t sit in the midst of people and use your hand to pick dirt from your

nose.
